Shillong, March 20: In a significant development in the Shillong IED blast case, Meghalaya police have apprehended seven individuals, including the prime suspect, in Mairang.

The main suspect, identified as 21-year-old Namphyrnai Lyngdoh Peinlang from Peinlang village, was arrested in Mairang, Eastern West Khasi Hills, and brought to Shillong on Monday.

The arrest was made possible through a joint operation conducted by police teams from Ri-Bhoi and Mairang.

Authorities are probing potential links between the arrested individuals and the banned outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), shedding light on the motives behind the March 9 IED bomb blast.

The explosion, originating from a garbage container in Them Mawlong, Shillong, had triggered widespread panic and concern across the city.

Earlier in the investigation, on March 11, two suspects were taken into custody. Among them is Tarson Lymba, a 58-year-old leader of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), apprehended from Dawki. The second suspect, Ebakordor Nongpluh, 26, hails from the Malki area in Shillong.

The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the explosion and bringing hope for justice to the affected community in Shillong.
