Imphal, Feb 13: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh made a significant announcement on Monday, revealing plans to identify and deport individuals who arrived in the state after 1961, regardless of their caste or community.

This decision is aimed at safeguarding the ethnic communities of Manipur amid sectarian tensions that have persisted since May 2023.

Singh attributed the violence in the state to the influence of the drug mafia and illegal migrants, particularly refugees from Myanmar.

Speaking at the launch of a skill development programme, he underscored the gravity of the situation, characterizing it as a struggle for existence and cultural identity.

Addressing the audience, Singh remarked, “The crisis we are facing today is one of struggle for existence, survival, and identity. Our generation is insecure today, so the government is working to make your future secure.”

He also highlighted the significance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s announcement regarding the termination of the India-Myanmar Free Movement Regime (FMR) on social media, stressing its importance in addressing internal security and demographic concerns.

Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure future by implementing measures like erecting fences and revoking the FMR to combat illegal immigration and illicit activities such as drug trade and weapons trafficking.

Despite facing criticism, he expressed confidence that future generations would not have to grapple with the same level of insecurity.

During the unveiling of the Honda India Foundation’s initiative ‘Buniyaad – Aatmanirbharta Ka Adhaar’, Singh extended appreciation to the foundation for choosing Manipur as the project site.

He also praised the residents of Manipur for their hospitality, discipline, and dedication to cleanliness, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives for the state’s development and prosperity.
