Imphal, Jan 07: Manipur celebrated a historic victory as its U-16 boys’ cricket team emerged triumphant in the BCCI Men’s U-16 Vijay Merchant Trophy for the 2023-24 season.

This win marked Manipur’s first championship title in the Plate Group category, securing a remarkable innings and 35-run victory against Meghalaya at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

The Chief Minister of Manipur, N. Biren Singh, along with other dignitaries like RK Imo Singh, a BJP legislator and President of the Manipur Cricket Association (MNCA), expressed immense pride and offered heartfelt congratulations to the team.

In recognition of the exceptional achievement, RK Imo Singh announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for the team and support staff. A grand felicitation event is scheduled in Imphal on January 9th to honor the victorious team.

The success of the U-16 team follows the historic promotion of the Manipur senior men’s team to the Ranji Trophy Elite Group.

The junior team’s outstanding performance showcased notable contributions from key players like Md Danish and Naesh Hussain, who delivered exceptional bowling performances. Captain Sougaijam Robinson played a pivotal role by contributing a stellar unbeaten century in the final match.

Manipur’s journey to the trophy included dominant victories in the group stage against Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya, along with a draw against Sikkim, securing their position at the top of their group.

Continuing their dominant form, they secured an innings and 114-run victory against Mizoram in the semi-finals before clinching the title against Meghalaya in the finals.
