Shillong, Jan 02: The Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya has made a goodwill gesture by handing over a Bangladeshi national to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) after the individual inadvertently crossed the international border.

The incident occurred in the South Garo Hills area on June 10, 2023. The Bangladeshi national was reported to be of unsound mind.

The official Twitter handle of BSF Meghalaya shared the information, stating, “As a goodwill gesture, 43 Battalion BSF Meghalaya handed over a Bangladeshi national of unsound mind to Border Guard Bangladesh who inadvertently crossed the International boundary and entered Indian territory in the area of South Garo Hills on June 10, 2023.”

This act of cooperation follows an earlier incident on May 13 when the Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya apprehended two Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally through the international border.

The individuals were suspected to have entered the country with intentions related to robbery.

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), a paramilitary force, is entrusted with safeguarding Bangladesh’s extensive borders, spanning over 4,427 kilometers along India and Myanmar.

Previously known as the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), the BGB plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity of Bangladesh’s international boundaries.

Similarly, the BSF serves as India’s border-guarding organization, responsible for securing borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The peaceful handover of the Bangladeshi national between the BSF and BGB underscores the established protocols and understanding between the two forces in managing incidents related to border crossings. Such coordinated efforts maintain peace and resolve border-related issues between neighboring countries.
