Shillong, April 18: The fourth edition of the Space Economy Leaders Meeting (SELM) under India’s G20 presidency commenced on April 17, 2023, in the northeastern city of Shillong. The meeting, which will end on April 18, 2023, was inaugurated by Meghalaya’s Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.

The pre-cursor event was organized by the Indian Space Research Organisation and was attended by MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh and G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, among others.

Sangma highlighted the importance of the event, stating that India had recently cleared its space policy and was making significant strides in space technology. He also lauded the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding that he was confident that Shillong’s name would echo in eternity.

Representatives from the Space Agency of Russia, the Chinese Government, ministers, ten ambassadors, and ISRO are attending the meeting.

According to P Shakeel Ahmed, Principal Secretary, the event is an opportunity to showcase and benchmark Meghalaya as a prime destination for tourism, investment, and development. The exhibits will include startups from the space economy sector and cultural heritage and events will be showcased.

The CM also talked about how space technology helps the Northeast region of India identify forest covers and the impacts of climate change on such areas. Sangma further stated that Meghalaya was one of the few states that use drones “in a strong manner” and not just to capture images and collect data.

He also mentioned that the state had received an award for its e-Proposals project at the recent WSIS competition held by the United Nations.

In conclusion, the SELM is a crucial event that aims to bring together G20 countries to discuss the latest advancements in space technology and its applications.

The event also provides an excellent opportunity to showcase Meghalaya’s potential as a prime destination for investment, development, and tourism.
