Shillong, June 28: Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh announced on June 27 that the state government will advocate for the recognition of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) as an institute of national importance, similar to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

After a review meeting of the health department, Lyngdoh stated that a delegation from the state will discuss the matter with Union Health Minister JP Nadda in the coming week.

The minister highlighted the need to operationalize the cancer research centre at NEIGRIHMS and to allocate seats for postgraduate studies for doctors from Meghalaya, given the institute’s location in the state.
