Aizawl Oct 21: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially declared that the 9th Legislative Assembly election in Mizoram will take place on November 7, with a total of 40 Assembly seats at stake, 39 of which are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs).

The current term of the Mizoram Assembly began on December 18, 2018, and will conclude on December 17, 2023. On the same day, the first phase of polling is scheduled in Chhattisgarh.

The upcoming elections are part of a larger electoral process, with Madhya Pradesh residents voting on November 17 during the second phase of Chhattisgarh polling. Rajasthan and Telangana will cast their votes on November 25 and November 30, respectively, with results from all five state Assemblies to be declared on December 3.

Mizoram is home to 8,51,895 general voters and 4,973 service voters, bringing the total number of electors to 8,56,868. The Election Commission of India reports that 50,611 new voters aged 18, registered between January 1, 2023, and October 1, 2023.

The state also accounts for approximately 8,490 senior citizen voters (80+) and one-third of gender voters. To facilitate the election, 1,276 polling stations have been established throughout the state.

The elections will feature key candidates such as Chief Minister Zoramthanga (Mizo National Front – MNF) running in Aizawl East-I, Tawnluia (MNF) in Tuichang, Lalsawta (Indian National Congress) in Aizawl West-III, Lalduhoma (Zoram People’s Movement – ZPM) in Serchhip, Robert Romawia Royte (MNF) in Hachhek, Vanlalsailova (Bharatiya Janata Party – BJP) in Dampa, Lalrinliana Sailo (BJP) in Mamit, and H Biakzaua (MNF) in Lawngtlai East.
