Guwahati, June 05: On the occasion of world environment day on Sunday, Northeast India observes the day through so many programs organized in the seven sisters of the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a programme on ‘Save Soil Movement’ here on the occasion of World Environment Day. Isha Foundation founder Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev had also participated in the event held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

The gathering was first addressed by Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru. PM Modi’s participation in the programme is reflective of the shared concerns and commitment toward improving the health of the soil in India.

World Environmental Day observed in Tezpur

Don Bosco School near Chitralekha Udyan observed World Environmental Day to generate awareness and remind the students about the importance to save and protecting nature. The programme was inaugurated by Fr. Theodore Purty, Principal of DBS, near Chitralekha Udyan in presence of the Headmistress Sr Shemily S H, teachers, students, and other dignitaries.

The programme began with a lovely environment song titled ‘The Earth,’ sung by a group of students of the school and it was followed by a drawing competition on the topic of ‘Save Earth’, a short play was also performed by the school students based on environmental awareness.

 

Different programmes and activities were conducted by the students such as cleanliness drive in and around the school campus, spreading the message to protect and save the plants through write-ups on placards. Beautiful messages were delivered by the students of different houses on the importance of saving the environment.

As a part of the programme, a variety of saplings were planted within the school premises by the students under the guidance of the teachers of the school.

World Environment Day: Talk on the environment held at Dibrugarh University

The NSS unit in collaboration with the IQAC and the department of Political Science had jointly organized a special talk on ‘Water and Environment (Clean Water Challenges)’ on the occasion of World Environment Day. Dr. Biraj Dutta, NSS Programme Officer welcomed the gathering and highlighted the objective of the programme. Dr Surajit Konwar, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Dibrugarh University delivered the invited talk on ‘Water and Environment (Clean Water Challenges)’.

Dr. Konwar highlighted the major problems relating to the environment and water-related problems. While talking about water, he emphasized the problem of arsenic and fluoride, which are very much alarming in India.

He further added that the North-East region is relatively safe compared to the mainland of India. But even after that, out of 33 districts of Assam 24 districts, the groundwater is polluted with arsenic and fluoride, which is very much alarming for the State of Assam.

Twitter campaign launched to save Doloo tea garden in Cachar

A Twitter campaign has been launched against the uprooting of tea bushes at Doloo tea garden in the Cachar district of Assam.

At least 3 million tea bushes at Doloo tea garden were recently uprooted by the authorities in the Cachar district of Assam for the construction of a Greenfield airport.

Nagaland CM stresses on sustainable living

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Sunday appealed to people to live sustainably with nature by “choosing cleaner and greener lifestyles” with his government taking a mega plantation drive across the state on the occasion of World Environment Day. With this year’s theme ‘Only One Earth’, he also said all citizens must realise that the earth is irreplaceable and all are part of its ecosystem.

“Let us live sustainably with nature by choosing cleaner & greener lifestyles. Happy World Environment Day,” Rio said on Twitter.

In a major initiative, the planning and development board of Phek district planted around two lakh saplings to celebrate the day. State Planning and Land Revenue Minister Neiba Kronu also joined the drive and urged people to take care of the planted trees for economic value.

He also stressed the need to encourage villagers to undertake large-scale plantations of fruit trees in the district.

A youth organization planted more than 10,000 saplings suitable for 104 Angami villages in three districts- Chumoukedima, Dimapur, and Kohima, while another such body of Kohima Village observed the day with the planting of 1,500 saplings. In the Tseminyu district, Sewanu village marked the day by conducting mass plantations of cherry, Ashoka, and bokal trees.

Churches across the state are also conducting tree-plantation drives on their complexes to create a green environment. The Naga Students’ Federation, an apex body of Naga students in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland with headquarters in Kohima, also observed the day. World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year.

The NSF in the presence of its senior leaders, including cabinet ministers and legislators, conducted tree plantation drives in the Naga Solidarity Park in Kohima. The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party’s Southern Angami-I Assembly Constituency unit organized a programme for plantations of 500 ornamental trees at the picturesque Naga heritage village Kisama. Local MLA and advisor to the Technical Education department Medo Yhokha was present there.

Arunachal CM focuses on local sustainability, and low-carbon mobility to tackle climate change

Urging people to work for the protection of the environment, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Sunday called for immediate attention to deal with climate change, loss of biodiversity, and pollution.

He also appealed to citizens to cooperate with authorities to tackle the environmental issues through low carbon mobility, waste and plastics management, and local sustainability.

“Three planet emergencies – climate change, biodiversity and nature loss, and pollution and waste – cry for immediate attention. On #WorldEnvironmentDay I call upon citizens to join hands to tackle them through low carbon mobility; waste and plastics Mngmt & local sustainability,” Khandu wrote on Twitter.
