Aizawl, Nov 08: The search for a missing 43-year-old Assam police constable who was on election duty for the Mizoram assembly polls continues. The constable, Sabin Nath, disappeared on Sunday, November 5, from Ngopa village in Saitual district, near the Manipur border.

Despite the conclusion of the peaceful assembly polls in Mizoram on Tuesday, authorities are still seeking information about Nath’s whereabouts.

Nath and other personnel had been deployed to Ngopa village for election duty. Saitual Deputy Commissioner Langura Tlau revealed that a commandant from the 9th battalion of Assam police arrived from Guwahati to assess the situation.

The Assam police personnel deployed at Ngopa are expected to leave for Madhya Pradesh on Thursday to fulfill their election duties in that state.

The Mizoram assembly election concluded with a high voter turnout of 80.43 percent, according to the election department. The final polling percentage will be determined after scrutinizing the votes. Notably, over 15,000 individuals, including senior citizens aged 80 and above and Persons with Disability (PwD), cast their votes through home voting and postal ballots.

Polling continued late into the night on Tuesday due to some technical glitches with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The last polling station in Marpara South, Mamit district, was closed at 11:50 p.m.

While there were instances of malfunctioning or minor technical glitches with EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines, they were promptly resolved and replaced.

All the EVMs were safely transported to strong rooms in their respective district headquarters on Wednesday.

Serchhip in central Mizoram recorded the highest polling percentage at 84.75, followed by Mamit in west Mizoram at 84.59 percent and Hnahthial at 84.16 percent. Siaha district had the lowest voter turnout at 75.79 percent.

Two polling stations, Aithur and Lungpuitlang, within the South Tuipui constituency in Hnahthial district registered 100 percent voter turnout.

A total of over 8.57 lakh voters, including 4.39 lakh female voters, were eligible to vote in the assembly polls. The election featured 174 candidates, including 18 women. The major political parties contesting the election were the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and the Congress, each contesting 40 seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contested 23 and 4 seats, respectively. There were also 27 independent candidates. The counting of votes is scheduled for December 3.
