Assam, Oct 5: Assam Police summoned model Rajkanya Baruah, who was granted bail in less than 12 hours in a case of reckless driving when she allegedly hit eight roadside workers and has reserved the two investigating officers.
One of the injured was admitted to GMCH in a critical condition as one of his legs was severed by the impact of the speeding vehicle. His other leg had to be amputated at the hospital.
The police have taken fresh steps on intervention from chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has assured appropriate police action after police came under sharp criticism from people across the state for letting off Rajkanya Baruah.
Bubul Choudhry, son of an injured worker, filed an FIR against the 29-year-old model. The workers were engaged in city beautification work on the eve of Vice-president Venkaiah Naidu’s visit.
CM said, “Police will be in trouble if the accused gets bail in the case. Wait and see …. The story is not over yet with the bail she was granted yesterday. Police will have to take steps in the case.”
The officers, who have been punished by being put in reserve close, are sub-inspector Sahir Ali and woman subinspector Abaha Rani Gogoi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Guwahati police district), Subrajyoti Borah said, “Summons have been issued to the accused.
We have asked her to appear at the Dispur police station by Tuesday. We have got to know that she is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city, about which she has not informed us. So, we will wait till tomorrow and then take further action. “There is provision to give more time to appear in the police station on medical grounds.”
Talking about prayer before the court for cancellation of bail, he said, “We have not initiated anything in that. We will consider the matter once she appears in the police station.”

Meanwhile, Gauhati High Court advocate Bijan Mahajan said, “Police can move prayer before the court for cancellation of the bail granted to the accused if they think that they have sufficient evidence and the accused should not be granted bail.” A senior police officer of the Guwahati police commissioner said the police have started a thorough investigation into the case.
“Two officers have been sent to reserve. The authorities of the hotel, from where she was returning in inebriated condition after the night curfew came into force, will also be brought under the purview of the investigation. It will also examine why charges of the Disaster Management Act were not slapped against the accused. Everything will be clear in a few days,” the officer said.
