Guwahati, Dec 08: The Assam government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has undertaken a significant initiative to conduct a socio-economic assessment of the state’s indigenous minorities. This decision, made during a cabinet meeting, reflects the government’s commitment to understanding and addressing the needs of these communities.

In line with this decision, the Directorate of Minority Affairs & Char Areas, Assam, will oversee the socio-economic assessment of the indigenous Assamese Muslims. This initiative aims to gain comprehensive insights into the living conditions, economic status, and social challenges faced by these minority communities. By conducting a detailed assessment, the government aims to formulate targeted policies and programs that can uplift and empower these communities.

As part of the restructuring process, the Directorate of Char Areas has been renamed to better reflect its extended responsibilities. The new nomenclature, Directorate of Minority Affairs & Char Areas, Assam, emphasizes the inclusive approach of the government, encompassing both minority affairs and char areas in its purview.

In addition to the socioeconomic assessment, the cabinet meeting addressed the issue of traditional bullfights. The government recognizes the cultural significance of such events and has decided to establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the ethical treatment and well-being of the animals involved.

The SOPs will serve as guidelines for organizing traditional buffalo fights during Magh Bihu, particularly in Ahatguri, Morigaon district, and Nagaon district, or any part of Assam where such events take place. The emphasis is on preventing any form of deliberate torture or cruelty to the animals, ensuring their welfare, and holding organizers accountable for humane practices during the annual Moh Juj festival.

This comprehensive approach by the Assam government reflects its commitment to promoting socio-economic development, preserving cultural traditions, and safeguarding the welfare of all communities, including indigenous minorities and the diverse wildlife involved in traditional events.
