Shillong, Feb 16: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly kicked off its shortest-ever budget session on February 16, with a primary focus on the state’s coal mining sector.

The inaugural day witnessed ceremonial proceedings attended by notable figures including Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Governor Phagu Chauhan.

Governor Chauhan made a significant announcement during the assembly’s opening, highlighting the state government’s endeavors to promote scientific coal mining.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, had approved 17 applications for prospecting licenses.

Six applicants have already received geological report approvals, while mining plans for four await environmental clearance.

“With these developments, it is expected that scientific mining of coal will begin soon,” stated Governor Chauhan, underscoring the potential advancement in the coal sector.

The assembly’s agenda is meticulously planned, allocating three days for private member’s business and five days for government affairs.

However, ahead of the session, the Vibrant People’s Party (VPP) clarified its stance on the Governor’s address in Hindi.

Though expressing reservations, the party chose not to oppose the address, acknowledging the provision for translation. VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh emphasized, “There will be no opposition as we have already welcomed the decision of the Speaker to have the translation.”

The Meghalaya budget session promises discussions on critical issues shaping the state’s future, with coal mining occupying a central position amidst deliberations.
