New Delhi, March 22: The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi unit convenor, Gopal Rai, has called for a nationwide protest against the BJP following the arrest of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Rai denounced Kejriwal’s arrest as a “murder of democracy” and an “announcement of dictatorship.”

The ED apprehended Kejriwal in an excise policy-linked money-laundering case, taking him to the agency’s headquarters.

The arrest, unprecedented for a sitting chief minister, followed the Delhi High Court’s refusal to shield the AAP national convenor from coercive action by the federal agency.

Rai urged citizens to assemble outside BJP offices across the country, initiating protests against what he deemed a dictatorial move.

“If Kejriwal can be arrested, anyone can be arrested, and their voice suppressed. Arvind Kejriwal is not merely a person, but an ideology,” Rai emphasized.

Accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of targeting opposition leaders, Rai claimed that the BJP, wary of diminished electoral prospects, was resorting to such tactics.

He urged Delhiites to rally against what he perceived as a flagrant abuse of power.

At a subsequent midnight press conference, Delhi ministers Atishi, Rai, along AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak, condemned Kejriwal’s arrest.

Pathak declared it a battle not just between the BJP and AAP but between the people of the country and the BJP.

Atishi vowed that Kejriwal’s fight would persist, transitioning from the streets to the courtroom. She deemed the arrest unconstitutional and highlighted the broader implications for democratic principles.

Earlier, Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely joined the AAP protest outside Kejriwal’s residence, expressing solidarity with their INDIA bloc partner and decrying the erosion of democracy in the country.
