Ayodhya, Jan 20: Amazon has received a notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) for allegedly selling sweets with misleading claims of being ‘Sri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.’ The notice was issued based on a complaint by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

The CCPA has asked Amazon to respond within seven days, warning of necessary action if no reply is provided. Amazon is accused of engaging in deceptive trade practices by selling sweets under the guise of prasad from the upcoming Ram Mandir consecration in Ayodhya. The company stated that it is taking “appropriate actions” in response to the matter.

The Consumer Authority initiated action after observing various sweets and food products listed on Amazon, claiming to be “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.”

The product descriptions include names like ‘Raghupati Ghee Ladoo,’ ‘Ayodhya Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad,’ ‘Khoya Khobi Ladoo,’ and ‘Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad – Desi Cow Milk Peda.’ The CCPA argues that such listings mislead consumers about the genuine characteristics of the products and influence their purchase decisions.

The notice is issued under Rule 4(3) of the Consumer Protection (E-commerce) Rules, 2020, which prohibits e-commerce entities from adopting unfair trade practices.

The Consumer Protection Act also prohibits misleading advertisements that falsely describe a product or service, give a false guarantee or are likely to mislead consumers about the nature, substance, quantity, or quality of the product or service.

In response, Amazon mentioned that it is investigating the misleading product claims by certain sellers and taking appropriate action against such listings following its policies. The company emphasized its commitment to maintaining a fair marketplace and ensuring customer trust.

This regulatory action reflects the increasing scrutiny of e-commerce platforms and their practices, particularly concerning the sale of religious or culturally sensitive items.

Consumer protection authorities are taking steps to ensure that online platforms adhere to rules and regulations, preventing deceptive practices and protecting consumers’ rights.
