Itanagar, Jan 16: A meeting convened at the DC Conference Hall, Yupia, addressed longstanding interstate border concerns between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Facilitated by the Papum Pare District Border People’s Forum Committee, the session engaged newly appointed circle officers to discuss and brief them on the prevailing border issues with Assam.

Rome Mele, Assistant Director of Border Affairs, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the border concerns and reports from the regional committee.

DC Papum Pare, Jiken Bomjen, encouraged participants to collaborate with Border Peace Committees at sub-division, circle, and village levels for cohesive border management.

SP Taru Gusar shared insights into border issues and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and status quo, especially with the upcoming general elections.

While reporting no recent cases of encroachment, SP Taru Gusar urged Border Peace Committees to promptly inform the administration if any such incidents arise.

TT Topu, DFO, Banderdewa, informed participants that the interstate borders within his jurisdiction fall under the reserve forest area.

The Forest Department is dedicated to protecting the forest and wildlife, having increased patrolling in the region.

Nabam Akin, President of the Papum Pare District Border People’s Forum Committee, raised concerns about a recent incident where a survey team from Assam collected soil samples in Bogoli without notifying the Papumpare district administration.

Akin emphasized the need for swift resolution of boundary issues and urged both administrations to abide by the 1979 agreement, signed by the Chief Ministers of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, which stipulated the sharing of information on activities around the border areas.

Following detailed discussions, the meeting concluded with a resolution that both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh should maintain the status quo and endorse peace committee initiatives at block and circle levels.

The meeting included the participation of various officials, including SDPO R Obing, EAC Dani Rikang, CO Gumto Afa Phassang, CO Tarasso Dr. Leegang Ampi, CO Kakoi Rongni Bagang, and committee members of PPDBPF, including Dake Thomas (VP), Tame Achung (GS), and Nabam Tasso (Likha Rosin).
