Assam Record

Guwahati, Sept 11: Assam is embarking on an ambitious mission to create a Guinness World Record by planting one crore (ten million) saplings in just two hours on September 17, 2023.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this audacious endeavor, with the goal of not only breaking six existing world records in tree planting but also establishing three new ones during this monumental event.

Visuals of a 22 km-long line of neatly arranged saplings at the Khanapara field in Guwahati have captured the imagination of many. The state government’s objective is to promote a tree-based economy in Assam and enable people to derive economic benefits by growing commercial trees.

The Assam government plans to plant one crore commercially viable tree saplings in a single day. This campaign aims to increase the forest cover in the state from 36 percent to 38 percent while empowering individuals to take ownership of these commercial trees and reap benefits from them.

While many saplings planted each year fail to survive due to various reasons, the government is determined to ensure a high success rate this time. Nearly 49 lakh people have already registered themselves on the portal for planting one crore saplings, reflecting significant public engagement and support for the initiative.

The campaign also underscores the importance of nurturing trees to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming and climate change. To achieve a world record, strict guidelines outlined by the adjudicators of Guinness World Records must be followed meticulously.

The event on September 17 is not only a remarkable environmental initiative but also a symbol of the collective determination of Assam to make a significant positive impact on the planet. It stands as a testament to the state’s commitment to sustainability and conservation.
