Guwahati, Sept 09: Assam is gearing up to make history with an awe-inspiring initiative, aiming to plant a staggering 1 crore saplings within just two hours on September 17, 2023. Visuals of a 22 km-long line of saplings neatly arranged at the Khanapara field in Guwahati have captured the imagination of many.

Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced this ambitious undertaking on September 7, expressing his intention to not only break six existing world records in tree planting but also establish three new ones during this monumental event.

The state government of Assam is leaving no stone unturned, as they plan to attempt nine Guinness World Records as part of this initiative. These records include:

  1. The largest spiral of saplings
  2. The largest number of saplings distributed in a single day at one venue
  3. The most trees planted in one hour
  4. The most trees planted in 24 hours
  5. The most trees planted in one hour by a team of 100
  6. The largest planted tree mosaic
  7. The largest photo album featuring people planting trees
  8. The most pledges taken for tree planting as part of nature conservation
  9. The largest online/offline nature conservation lesson

The monumental tree-planting drive is scheduled to take place in commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi, India’s Father of the Nation, coinciding with his birth anniversary. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared details of the initiative, explaining that approximately 40 lakh members of women’s self-help groups from across the state would each plant two commercially viable saplings, contributing a total of 80 lakh saplings.

The remaining 20 lakh or more saplings will be planted by individuals from various walks of life, including Anganwadi workers, tea garden laborers, government officials, police and forest battalions, and members of the general public.
