Guwahati, Jan 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed the Assam Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, to file a criminal case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. This directive follows a clash between Congress supporters and the police in Guwahati on January 23.

The clash occurred after Assam Police, acting on Sarma’s instructions, prevented a yatra from entering the city, leading to protests from Congress workers.

CM Sarma accused Rahul Gandhi of allegedly inciting the crowd and violating guidelines, resulting in a major traffic jam in Guwahati. Visuals from the incident depict Congress supporters clashing with police personnel while Gandhi observed from a distance.

In response to the clash, Assam CM posted on X, “These are not part of Assamese culture. We are a peaceful state. Such ‘naxalite tactics’ are completely alien to our culture. I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader @RahulGandhi for provoking the crowd & use the footage you have posted on your handles as evidence. Your unruly behaviour and violation of agreed guidelines have resulted in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati now.”

Due to potential traffic disruptions and concerns about law and order, the yatra was rerouted, leading to a substantial police presence at the Khanapara crossing, the city’s entry point.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee leaders claimed they were compelled to alter their route after being denied entry to Guwahati.

Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to hold a press conference at Hajo at 1:20 pm to discuss the incident and the progress of the yatra. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, moving through the Northeast, has faced several obstacles in BJP-ruled Assam, including Gandhi being denied entry to the shrine at Sankardeva’s birthplace in Nagaon district.
