Guwahati, Sep 22: In a powerful statement on wildlife conservation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the one-horned rhinoceros as the “pride and crown jewel” of the state’s biodiversity.
Using his official social media account on X, Sarma highlighted the deep cultural and ecological connection between Assam and its rhino population.
Rhinos are synonymous to the identity of Assam. They are our pride and the crown jewel of our biodiversity.
Ever since we assumed office, we have taken various initiatives to protect the prized species, expand its habitat and ensure its safety.

“Rhinos are synonymous with Assam’s identity,” Sarma remarked. “They are our pride and the crown jewel of our biodiversity.”
Sarma emphasized his government’s efforts since taking office to protect the rhino population, including habitat expansion and enhanced safety measures.

“On World Rhino Day, we reaffirm our dedication to protecting Assam’s rhinos,” he said, underscoring the state’s conservation focus.
Prominent wildlife expert Dr. Bibhab Kumar Talukdar also recognized Assam’s key role in preserving the greater one-horned rhino, an endangered species found in India and Nepal. He noted the state’s long-standing commitment to rhino conservation over the last 120 years, which has seen significant growth in their population and habitat.

Dr. Talukdar pointed out the notable decline in rhino poaching in recent years, largely due to the Assam government’s strict anti-poaching measures and modernization of forest protection forces. He credited these advancements for reducing threats from armed poachers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kaziranga National Park was also mentioned, reflecting the national commitment to rhino conservation. Dr. Talukdar emphasized the need to maintain these efforts, ensuring future generations can experience the rhino in its natural habitat.
“The pride we have for this majestic creature must be preserved for future generations,” he concluded, stressing the importance of continued protection.
