Guwahati, July 23: The governments of Meghalaya and Assam have made strides in resolving their long-standing border issues. During a joint regional committee meeting held recently, the two states discussed three areas of contention and took decisions aimed at finding an amicable solution.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, shared the outcomes of the meeting, stating that agreements were reached concerning the Deshdemoreah area, as well as Matamur and Borduar. Both sides presented their cases, engaging in detailed discussions.

The Deputy Commissioners from both Assam and Meghalaya have been directed to conduct further assessments of these areas, with a scheduled site inspection of Deshdemoreah set for August 26. Dates for site inspections of the other two areas will be determined later.

The recent regional committee meeting, held at the State Guest House, Koinadhora in Guwahati, was attended by Assam’s Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, and Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.

It is important to note that Assam and Meghalaya had previously encountered 12 areas of dispute related to their interstate boundaries. However, six of these contentious issues have already been successfully resolved.

In a high-level meeting on May 24, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma discussed border matters in six specific areas, laying the foundation for further discussions.

During the May meeting, it was decided that the regional committees from both states would collectively visit the border areas and conduct thorough assessments to understand the ground reality. This approach aimed to suggest effective measures to address the outstanding issues.

The recent joint regional committee meeting marks a positive step forward in resolving the border disputes between the two states. It underscores the commitment of both governments to work collaboratively and find mutually agreeable solutions to long-standing problems.

The committees also intend to engage with various stakeholders to ensure that their perspectives are taken into account during the decision-making process. By involving all concerned parties, the states hope to foster an environment of cooperation and inclusivity.
