Imphal, Oct 29: Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Women’s Group Meira Paibis in Manipur have issued a stern ultimatum to the state government regarding the retrieval of the bodies of two slain students, Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit. They demand the bodies be handed over by November 3 or face intensified protests.

A public gathering on October 29 in Imphal West district brought together over 40 CSOs, local clubs, and Meira Paibis from across Manipur.

Ningthouja Lancha, the spokesperson for Meitei FAMBEI, expressed deep concern over the government’s failure to locate the students’ bodies, despite the arrest of suspects by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The lack of progress has led to growing frustration among the people.

Lancha emphasized the urgency of the situation and declared that they could no longer tolerate the authorities’ inaction in recovering the bodies. The collective decision of the CSOs and Meira Paibis is to initiate various forms of protests starting from November 6 if the state government doesn’t promptly return the remains of Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit.

They remain committed to seeking justice for the two students who were victims of a heinous assault by unidentified attackers. The students had gone missing on July 6, and videos of their gruesome murders surfaced on social media more than two months later, leading to the CBI’s involvement and the subsequent arrests of five individuals allegedly connected to the incident.
