New Delhi, Dec 04: Crimes against women, children, senior citizens, Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) witnessed an alarming surge in 2022, with increases of 4%, 8.7%, 9.3%, 13.1%, and 14.3%, respectively, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) annual report titled “Crime in India 2022.”

The report, released on Friday and publicly disclosed on Sunday, is a comprehensive analysis based on data from 36 states, Union territories, and central agencies.

The delayed report, usually released by July or August each year, serves as a vital resource for policymakers, government bodies, academics, and others involved in policy formulation and analysis.

In 2022, crimes against women totalled 4,45,256 cases, marking a 4% increase from the 2021 figure of 4,28,278. The majority of cases were related to cruelty by spouses or their relatives (31.4%), followed by kidnapping and abduction (19.2%), assault “with Intent to outrage modesty” (18.7%), and rape (7.1%).

Rajasthan reported the highest number of rape cases (5,399 out of 31,516), followed by Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Haryana. Delhi reported 1,212 rape cases in 2022. The overall crime rate per lakh women population was 66.4 in 2022, compared to 64.5 in 2021.

Crimes against children surged by 8.7%, with 1,62,449 cases registered in 2022, compared to 1,49,404 in 2021. Kidnapping and abduction constituted a majority (45.7%), with 39.7% filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Crime against senior citizens increased by 9.3%, reaching 28,545 cases in 2022 compared to 26,110 cases in 2021. The majority of these cases (27.3%) were related to hurt, followed by theft (13.8%) and forgery, cheating, and fraud (11.2%).

Crimes against SC rose by 13.1%, reaching 57,582 cases in 2022 compared to 50,900 cases in 2021. Crimes against ST increased by 14.3%, from 8,802 to 10,064 cases in 2022.

Economic offences witnessed an 11.1% increase, totaling 1,74,013 cases. Corruption cases rose by 10.5%, reaching 4,139 in 2022 compared to 3,745 in 2021. Cyber crimes surged by 24.4%, with 65,893 cases reported in 2022, compared to 52,974 in 2021.
