Tawang, Feb 10: The Sela Pass tunnel project in Arunachal Pradesh, standing as the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel at an altitude of 13,000 feet, is swiftly nearing its completion with the Border Roads Organization (BRO) having accomplished 90 percent of the construction.

This strategic initiative is poised to revolutionize connectivity in the Tawang district, significantly reducing travel time, and is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi later this month.

Ravikant Tiwary, the project director, expressed, “At an altitude of 13,000 feet, the Sela Tunnel comprises two tunnels. Once operational, it will drastically cut down travel time to nearly one hour during the summer months in Tawang. In the harsh winters, travelers often faced delays of 3 to 4 hours at Sela Pass. With the completion of this project, travelers can bypass these delays, even in snow-capped areas like Baishaki in the Tawang district, without the need for tyre chains. This monumental achievement is the result of a relentless 24/7 effort by the Border Roads Organization, supported by a workforce of over 800 individuals.”

The Sela Tunnel project encompasses Tunnel 1, a 980-meter-long single-tube tunnel, and Tunnel 2, a 1,555-meter-long twin-tube tunnel.

Once operational, it will ensure all-weather connectivity for residents and the armed forces stationed in Tawang.

As the construction of this vital infrastructure project draws to a close, the BRO is meticulously adding the finishing touches, marking a significant leap forward in the region’s transportation network and strategic infrastructure.
