Aizawl, Nov 07: The first ever eco-friendly polling station, constructed with bamboo and thatching grass, was inaugurated by Lalngura Tlau, District Election Officer of Mizoram-Manipur border Saitual district at Saitual town within Tawi assembly constituency.

The eco polling station has a thatched roof made of sun grass or thatching grass and the pillars and walls are made of bamboo. The polling booth will be used when the polling begins at 7 AM on Tuesday morning.

Tlau said that it was good to have a polling station constructed with bio-degradable materials where plastic products are extensive, causing extensive environmental hazards. “This will be useful for creating awareness about the preservation of the environment,” he said.

Any materials made of plastic will not be allowed to be taken inside the eco polling station on November 7, during the voting. Water and tea will also be served with ‘mauthei’ or cups made of raw bamboo in the polling station area.

A hut was also constructed as a restroom for the aged and women using the same materials near the polling station.
