Guwahati, Jan 27: Former Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with the official announcement expected on January 28, according to reliable sources.

Alongside Dutta, three other prominent leaders, including former Congress MLA Bismita Gogoi, former All Assam Student Union (AASU) president Dipanka Nath, and former AASU vice-president Prakash Das, are also slated to join the BJP on the same day.

Additionally, former Congress leader Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee is expected to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on January 29.

The move by Angkita Dutta to join the BJP was anticipated, especially after she faced a snub from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during his recent Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.

On January 18, Dutta sought to meet Rahul Gandhi during the yatra to address her grievances and seek justice but was ignored.

Despite her efforts to submit a memorandum and request reinstatement in the party, Gandhi’s convoy passed without providing her with an audience.

This incident sparked a debate on the efficacy of the Congress party’s internal mechanisms to address serious allegations and raised questions about justice within political organizations.

Angkita Dutta was expelled from the primary membership of the Congress party for six years on April 22, 2023, following her allegations of sexual harassment against Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas B. V.

Despite her suspension, Dutta remained hopeful that Gandhi’s yatra, focused on addressing injustices and promoting a more equitable society, would deliver the justice she sought.

The anticipated move to the BJP suggests a shift in her political allegiance and adds to the ongoing political dynamics in Assam.
