Guwahati, April 08: Assam has seen minimal applications for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), with only one individual from the Barak Valley applying so far, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sarma addressed the media, emphasizing the scarcity of CAA applications in the state. He highlighted the misconception surrounding the CAA protests, stating that those who opposed it must now provide answers.
Despite concerns that the CAA would lead to an influx of applicants, Sarma noted the stark reality of only one application from Assam since the law’s implementation.
He further mentioned that certain political factions had exploited emotions for their agenda, a tactic now exposed by the lack of citizenship applications.

Sarma cited the example of the Sonari constituency, where Bengali-speaking communities reside, yet no citizenship applications under the CAA have been filed.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a case against the CAA filed by the Coordination Committee on April 9th, bolstering opposition to the legislation.
Dr. Hiren Gohain, a distinguished scholar and social scientist, is leading the charge against the CAA, lending significant weight to the opposition movement.
Gohain’s notable academic background and past activism, including facing sedition charges in January 2019 for protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, underscore the gravity of the issue at hand.
