Guwahati, March 24: An IIT Guwahati student was arrested by police on Saturday after he allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

The fourth-year student claimed on a social media platform and in emails that he wanted to join the terrorist group and disappeared from the IIT Guwahati campus.

He was later located at Hajo in Kamrup district of Assam.

The student was captured four days after the arrest of ISIS-India chief Haris Farooqi alias Harish Ajmal Farukhi and his associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan in Dhubri district after entering from Bangladesh, it said “The student was arrested while traveling and Further legal action would be taken,” Director General of Police GP Singh posted on X.

“After receiving an email, we verified the authenticity of the content and initiated an investigation,” a senior police officer said.

He added that the email was sent by a student claiming he was on his way to join ISIS. Later, IIT-Guwahati authorities were immediately contacted, who said that the student in question had been “missing” since noon and his mobile phone was also switched off.

A search was launched to find him and he was found in the Hajo area, about 30 kilometers from Guwahati, the senior police officer with the help of locals told

In the afternoon: “After the initial interrogation, he was taken to the STF office. We are reviewing the reason for the email,” he added.

A black flag “allegedly similar to that of ISIS” and an Islamic manuscript were found in the hostel room of the student who hailed from Okhla in Delhi, Assam’s Special reported.

Sepcial Task Force (STF) told “We are checking the seized items, it is too early to say much.” We are investigating the intent of sending the email. “The student has provided some details but we cannot reveal more now,” said a senior police official.
