Weather Update, May 06: After enduring scorching heat waves, certain areas of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, and Odisha are poised to experience relief over the next two days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in these regions.

The IMD forecast indicates that Gangetic West Bengal will witness fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds (60-70 kmph) on Monday and Tuesday.

Additionally, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Odisha are expected to experience scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next five days.

On Sunday, temperatures soared above 40 degrees Celsius in most districts, with Panagarh in Gangetic West Bengal registering a sweltering 44.5 degrees Celsius—the highest in the region.

Similarly, Karur Paramathi in Tamil Nadu recorded a temperature of 43.8 degrees Celsius, while Saraikela in Jharkhand recorded the highest maximum daily temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, as reported by the IMD.

Further relief is anticipated as isolated heavy rainfall is forecasted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, and south interior Karnataka are likely to experience heavy rainfall on Tuesday, while Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive heavy rainfall between Wednesday and Friday.

This respite coincides with meteorological phenomena, including a cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, another over northeast Bihar, and a trough extending from northeast Bihar to North Odisha in the lower tropospheric levels.

Additionally, strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India are predicted to persist at lower tropospheric levels until Tuesday.

Looking ahead, a fresh Western disturbance is anticipated to impact Northwest India from May 9 onwards.

This disturbance is expected to bring isolated light to moderate rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad on Monday, followed by rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between Monday and Wednesday.
