Imphal, March 02: Manipur MLA Lourembam Rameshwar Meetei of Keirao Assembly Constituency has proposed a “shoot at sight” policy against illegal immigrants from Myanmar, alleging that they exploit loopholes to obtain voter cards and establish themselves in Manipur.

He emphasized the need for effective implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and stricter surveillance to tackle the issue.

During the ongoing Manipur Assembly session, Meetei expressed concerns about illegal immigrants in his constituency, claiming that people from Mizoram migrated to Manipur and registered on the voter list using Aadhar cards.

He stressed the importance of implementing the NRC to address such issues and urged the government to take strict action, including biometric surveillance and specific policies.

Meetei highlighted incidents of land encroachment and illegal immigration, warning about the potential national security threat posed by undocumented immigrants.

He called on indigenous communities and fellow MLAs to actively prevent illegal immigration and land encroachment.

Citing examples of immigrants marrying locals to obtain Aadhar cards and voter list registration, Meetei urged practical steps beyond mere resolutions.

He proposed a “shoot at sight” policy, drawing parallels to government actions against the Meitei community in the past.

The MLA emphasized the need for valley MLAs to remain vigilant and urged the Naga community to play a significant role in preventing illegal immigration. He highlighted the displacement of indigenous communities by immigrants and demanded strict measures to address the issue.

Meetei underscored the potential strain on resources and disruption of the state’s demographic balance due to illegal immigration.

He advocated for a stringent law to curb illegal immigration, proposing controversial measures to grant security forces the authority to use “shoot at sight” tactics against illegal immigrants.
