Ranchi, March 02: A shocking incident unfolded in Jharkhand’s Dumka district as a foreign tourist from Spain was reportedly gang-raped on Friday night, raising alarm across the state. The assault occurred at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area while the tourist couple were camping in a makeshift tent.

Jarmundi Sub Divisional Police Officer Santosh Kumar confirmed the incident, promising further details as investigations progress.

The victim, along with her partner, had arrived from Bangladesh on a two-wheeler and were en route to Nepal via Bihar when the assault took place.

According to sources, seven to eight local youths were allegedly involved in the heinous crime, with three suspects already arrested. A manhunt is underway to apprehend the remaining perpetrators, as the victim receives medical care in a local hospital.

Responding to the distressing news, State Health Minister Banna Gupta expressed his shock and vowed stringent action against the culprits per the law.

While asserting the government’s commitment to justice, he emphasized the need for thorough investigation and swift justice.

The incident drew sharp criticism from political leaders, with Jharkhand BJP president Babulal Marandi expressing concern over its potential impact on tourism in the state.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey condemned the assault, attributing it to systemic failures in maintaining law and order.

BJP MLA Anant Ojha described the incident as a “stain” on the state’s reputation, citing it as evidence of deteriorating law enforcement. He urged prompt action from law enforcement agencies and demanded accountability from the state government.

The timing of the incident, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jharkhand, further underscores the urgency of addressing security concerns within the state.

PM Modi had earlier expressed grave concerns over law and order issues during his visit, emphasizing the need for immediate action to restore public confidence and safety.
