Imphal, March 02: The Manipur Legislative Assembly has made a significant move by passing a private member resolution advocating for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state.

This resolution, backed by a diverse coalition including representatives from various communities, marks a pivotal moment in the state’s legislative history.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh took to social media on March 2 to announce this historic occasion, emphasizing the collective determination of indigenous communities in Manipur to safeguard the state and the nation through the implementation of the NRC.

The resolution was passed during the assembly’s 5th session of the 12th Assembly on March 1, reaffirming a previous resolution passed in August 2022.

The assembly’s decision underscores the importance of the NRC in protecting the state’s interests and contributing to the nation’s welfare.

By urging the swift implementation of the NRC, the assembly aims to address citizenship and immigration issues effectively, ensuring transparency and accountability in demographic matters.

However, tensions arose during the session as Congress MLAs expressed dissatisfaction over the Speaker’s refusal to admit a private member’s resolution on the Kangla Resolution.

Despite this, the assembly proceeded with its resolution on the NRC, highlighting the urgency of its implementation for the state’s benefit.

After the session, Okram Ibobi, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), voiced the party’s frustration over the Speaker’s decision.

He emphasized the importance of restoring peace in the state and expressed disappointment that similar resolutions proposed by Congress MLAs at Kangla on January 24 were not adopted by the assembly.

The passage of the resolution advocating for the implementation of the NRC in Manipur reflects the assembly’s commitment to addressing citizenship and immigration issues and ensuring the state’s security and integrity.

It signifies a collective effort by various communities to safeguard the interests of Manipur and contribute to the nation’s well-being.
