Mizoram Election

Aizawl, Dec 04: The announcement of the Mizoram Election Result 2023 was deferred by a day, moving from the initially scheduled date of December 3 to December 4. This decision came amid protests and opposition in Mizoram, particularly from political parties and civil society organizations, citing the significance of Sunday as a day for church activities in the predominantly Christian state.

The Election Commission (EC) received multiple representations urging a change in the counting date due to its clash with a sacred day for the people of Mizoram. Responding to these concerns, the EC released a statement saying, “The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting to December 4 (Monday).”

Before this decision, various groups, including the Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), demonstrated against the counting being scheduled on a Sunday. Organizations like the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) participated in protests under the umbrella of NGOCC, expressing their disagreement with the initial counting date.

On December 1, the Election Commission officially announced the deferment of the counting date for Mizoram to December 4 (Monday). The state witnessed a high voter turnout, with over 80% of the 8.57 lakh voters exercising their franchise in the 40-member state assembly.

In the Mizoram assembly elections, a party needs to secure at least 21 seats out of 40 to form the government. The India Today Axis-My India exit poll predicts a significant victory for the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), projecting them to secure 28-35 seats. In contrast, the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF) is anticipated to win only 3-7 seats.

The exit poll also indicates a challenging scenario for the Congress, once a dominant force in Mizoram, projecting them to secure only 2-4 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to have a minimal presence with 0-2 seats, according to the exit poll.

Regarding the vote share, the ZPM is predicted to secure 49%, the MNF 27%, the Congress 20%, and the BJP 2%, as per the exit poll results. The final results on December 4 will determine the actual outcome of the Mizoram assembly elections.
