Aizawl, Dec 04: The counting of votes in Mizoram, one of the five states that recently went into polls, has commenced. The key players in the Mizoram assembly election are the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) led by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) led by Lalduhoma, and the Congress. The BJP, a minor player in the northeastern state and which won one seat, is hoping to make inroads.

India Today Axis-My India exit poll has predicted a clean sweep by the ZPM in Mizoram, securing 28–35 seats in the 40-member assembly. The MNF – a constituent of the BJP-led, meanwhile, is likely to be reduced to just 3–7 seats.

The Congress, once a dominant force in Mizoram, is projected to put up a poor show and may end up with only 2-4 seats. The BJP is expected to settle at 0-2 seats, the exit poll showed.

Mizoram voted on November 7 and the counting of votes was supposed to begin on Sunday along with the other four states – Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana. However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) deferred it by a day as Sunday holds a special significance for the Christian-majority population in the state.
