Aizawl, Nov 08: Mizoram, on November 7, 2023, saw a significant and peaceful electoral exercise as the state voted to fill all 40 seats in its legislative assembly elections. There were no reports of untoward incidents, and the day witnessed a robust voter turnout.

In the morning, the state reported an encouraging voter turnout, with 49.2 percent of registered voters casting their votes by 11 a.m. As the day progressed, this figure climbed to 76.53 percent by 4 pm. However, the final voter turnout data was unavailable as of 9.05 p.m., as polling continued in six stations where it had not yet concluded.

An interesting moment unfolded earlier in the day when Chief Minister Zoramthanga experienced a technical glitch while attempting to cast his vote at the Ramhlun Venglai Primary School in the Aizawl North II constituency.

The glitch, attributed to a malfunctioning Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), initially prevented him from registering his vote. However, the resilient Chief Minister returned to the polling booth, successfully casting his vote later in the day.

Meanwhile, his primary opponent in the elections, Lalduhoma, the candidate representing the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), chose not to vote on Election Day. Instead, he spent the day in his constituency, Serchhip, located approximately 90 kilometers away from Aizawl, where he is registered to vote.

The high voter turnout, without significant disruptions, indicates an active and engaged electorate in Mizoram. As the state awaits the final turnout figures, the democratic process has unfolded smoothly, setting the stage for the declaration of results and the formation of the next government in this northeastern Indian state.
