Guwahati, Nov 08: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced a significant Diwali gift for state government employees, adding to the festive joy of the season. He announced a 4 percent hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) for the state’s workforce, further brightening their celebrations.

With this latest increase, the total DA for state government employees in Assam now stands at an impressive 46 percent.

During its weekly meeting on November 7, the Assam Cabinet made several decisions to enhance the well-being of its citizens and boost various sectors within the state. These decisions include improved benefits for state government employees, land allocation for indigenous landless families, healthcare initiatives, and financial restructuring for public enterprises.

One of the notable moves taken by the Assam Cabinet is aimed at addressing the health and nutrition of school children in Char and Chapori areas. The Cabinet approved the provision of three eggs per week in the Midday Meal scheme, starting from December 1, 2023. This initiative aims to combat malnutrition and promote healthy growth by providing children with a valuable source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

On National Cancer Awareness Day, the Assam Cabinet allocated Rs 135 crore for the construction of ten state-of-the-art Cancer Care Hospitals. This project, encompassing three hospitals in the first phase and seven in the second, is a significant step forward in providing comprehensive cancer care and generating employment opportunities for around 8,000 people.

To ensure the availability of essential drugs in government hospitals, the Assam Cabinet has released Rs 135 crore under the Free Drugs Scheme. This program is designed to provide crucial pharmaceuticals, surgical items, consumables, and linens at no cost to patients, strengthening healthcare support to those in need.

With the additional 4 percent Dearness Allowance (DA) effective from December 1, 2023, state government employees have reason to celebrate. The decision also includes arrear DA payments for the period from July 2023 to November 2023, providing financial relief and elevating the total DA to 46 percent.
