Nagaland killings: Assam Congress joins chorus for AFSPA repeal

Guwahati, Dec 15: Along with AFSPA, organizations, tribal bodies, political parties of Nagaland and other states of North East India, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has also demanded of repealing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 from the North-Eastern region.

The chorus for repealing of AFSPA from the North-Eastern region grows shriller following the killing of 14 civilians in Nagaland Mon district.

Bhupen Kumar Borah – president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee said that, only because of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), many people of the North East have lost their lives.

The recent incident that took place in Nagaland’s Mon district is one of the biggest examples. Many people of the North-Eastern region have lost their lives only because of AFSPA. So we Assam Pradesh Congress Committee demand the Union government that, it (AFSPA) should be withdrawn immediately,” Bhupen Borah said.

Earlier, the Nagaland cabinet had decided to write to the centre for repealing the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from the state.

A special session of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly will be held on December 20 to discuss the recent incident that took place in the Mon district.

Apart from the Nagaland government and many civil society organizations, tribal bodies, students’ organizations of the North East, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his party National People’s Party (NPP) also raised their voices against the AFSPA.
