Sports, June 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian cricket team over the phone for their seven-run victory over South Africa in the ICC T20 World Cup final.

In a tweet, PM Modi praised the team’s excellent skill and spirit throughout the tournament, highlighting their motivating commitment. “Spoke to the Indian team and congratulated them on their exemplary success at the T20 World Cup. They have shown excellent skill and spirit throughout the tournament. Each player’s commitment is very motivating,” he tweeted.

During the conversation, PM Modi commended Rohit Sharma for his splendid captaincy and T20I career. He mentioned Virat Kohli for his valuable 76 runs and immense contributions to Indian cricket.

The Prime Minister also thanked Rahul Dravid, who stepped down as head coach following India’s win, for his significant contributions.

The Prime Minister appreciated Hardik Pandya’s last-over heroics and Suryakumar Yadav’s game-changing catch to dismiss David Miller. He also praised Jasprit Bumrah’s contributions to the T20 World Cup and Indian cricket.

On Saturday, PM Modi released a video congratulating the ‘Men in Blue’ for their victory over South Africa in the see-saw final at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

“CHAMPIONS! Our team brings the T20 World Cup home in STYLE! We are proud of the Indian cricket team. This match was HISTORIC,” he tweeted, along with a congratulatory video message for the team.

This was India’s second T20 World Cup win in 17 years, following their maiden victory in 2007, and their first major ICC title in 11 years since the Champions Trophy in 2013.
