Guwahati, April 13: The festivities of Rongali Bihu commenced in Assam with Goru Bihu, dedicated to honoring livestock, initiating the week-long celebration on April 13th.
Goru Bihu, observed mainly by rural residents, marks the onset of the seven-day Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu. It falls on the final day of the Assamese calendar month of Chot, preceding the first month, Bohag.
Traditionally, on Goru Bihu, cattle, especially cows, undergo traditional rituals.
Owners lead them to nearby rivers or ponds for a ceremonial bath and apply a paste of black lentils and fresh turmeric.

Leaves of dighalati and makhioti are used to protect against infections and flies, while local vegetables like bottle gourd and eggplant are fed for their well-being.
In observance of tradition, old tethering ropes are replaced with new ones. Goru Bihu celebrations were reported across the state, with farmers adhering to customary practices by bathing their cows and participating in the festivities.
