Kohima, Oct 21: Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu has formally resigned as the president of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), a post he held for nearly two decades, making him the longest-serving president in the party’s history. This momentous occasion marked the passing of the torch during the NPF’s general convention and foundation day celebrations held at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima.

Apong Pongener, the NPF’s working president, is poised to succeed Liezietsu as the next leader of the party. The transition of leadership in the NPF holds historical significance, given Liezietsu’s enduring presence and commitment to the party since its inception.

Liezietsu’s association with the Naga People’s Front has been deeply rooted in its transformation, from its origins in the Naga People’s Convention to its present form as the Naga People’s Front. His leadership and dedication have been unwavering during a period of transformative change for the party.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu initially joined the United Democratic Front in 1969 and subsequently remained a steadfast member of the party, contributing in various capacities. His illustrious political career spans nearly five decades, during which he has been elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) an impressive eight times. Over the years, he has held several key portfolios, firmly establishing his reputation as a seasoned statesman.

In 2003, Liezietsu emerged victorious in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly election, representing the Naga People’s Front in the Northern Angami-I (ST) constituency. Following his election, he was appointed as the Minister for Urban Development, a role in which he served with distinction.

On the 22nd of February, 2017, Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu was sworn in as the 17th Chief Minister of Nagaland, marking a pivotal juncture in his political career. His leadership during this tenure showcased his commitment to the welfare and development of Nagaland.

Notably, Liezietsu retained his constituency in the 2008 election, reaffirming his connection with the people he represented. In this term, he continued to serve as the Minister for Urban Development, and his responsibilities expanded to include Higher and Technical Education, reflecting his commitment to the growth and progress of the state.
