Agartala, July 04: The operationalization of Maitri Setu marks a pivotal moment for the Northeastern states, particularly during the challenging monsoon season when connectivity disruptions are common.

Located in Sabroom, Tripura’s South district, this 1.9-kilometer bridge over the Feni River connects directly to Ramgarh in Bangladesh, symbolizing strong Indo-Bangladesh cooperation.

Built for INR 133 crore by NHIDCL and inaugurated in June 2017 by Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina, Maitri Setu offers a crucial trade route and promises to boost economic growth and tourism across South Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and beyond.

Key Points:

  • Maitri Setu bridges the gap for Northeast India’s connectivity woes during monsoons, facilitating the swift movement of essential commodities.
  • Previously reliant on railways and roadways via Assam, the region, including Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and parts of Assam, faced severe shortages during heavy rainfall.
  • The bridge’s strategic location opens a direct land route to Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, significantly reducing transport distances and costs.
  • It positions Agartala as a key hub for trade with East and Southeast Asian markets, leveraging the bridge’s proximity to international sea ports.
  • The Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Sabroom complements Maitri Setu, enhancing seamless cross-border movement and trade under Prime Minister Modi’s Look East Policy.

This initiative promises to enhance economic integration, infrastructure development, and overall prosperity for the Northeast, bolstering ties between India and Bangladesh.
