Bengal, April 13: The Election Commission has imposed a ban on Bengal BJP leader Rahul Sinha from campaigning for the next 48 hours over his remarks on the Cooch Behar firing incident in which four locals lost their lives during the fourth phase of polling in Bengal.
The EC’s ban starts from Tuesday noon till 12 pm on April 15 over his remarks on Sitalkuchi, Cooch Behar violence in which five people lost their lives, including four who were shot dead by the central forces.
Bengal BJP Rahul Sinha had allegedly said on Monday that not four, but eight people should have been shot by the central forces in Cooch Behar’s Sitalkuchi.
Rahul Sinha, BJP’s candidate in the Habra constituency, said, “Not four, eight people should have been shot dead in Shitalkuchi.” Rahul Sinha made the “eight should have been shot, not four” statement during an election rally in the constituency.
The order says “the commission has carefully considered the matter suo-moto and is of the considered view that Rahul Sinha has in violation of the clauses (1) & (4) of part 1 of ‘General Conduct of Model Code of Conduct for the guidance of political parties and candidates and the provisions contained in sub-section (3A) of section 123 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 and sub-section (1) (a) of Section 153 (A) of the Indian Panel Code 1860 made highly provocative statements mocking the human life, inciting the forces that could have serious law & order implications thereby adversely affecting the election process.”

The TMC on Monday urged the Election Commission to take strict action against BJP leaders Rahul Sinha, Dilip Ghosh, and Sayantan Basu over their alleged inflammatory remarks over the Cooch Behar firing incident.
The ban on Rahul Sinha comes a day after the Election Commission imposed a similar ban on West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over her remarks on the central forces guarding the polling booths during the assembly election in Bengal.
