Agartala, Dec 15: Tripura Police successfully apprehended two key leaders of the banned insurgent outfit National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) (Biswamohan) on December 14, 2023.

The arrested individuals are Sachin Debbarma, the former Army Chief, and Utpal Debbarma, also known as Omthai, the former Secretary General of NLFT (BM). The arrest took place in Simna, a tribal-majority village located near the Indo-Bangla international border in West Tripura.

The two NLFT leaders, who held prominent military and political roles within the banned insurgent group, were captured immediately after crossing into Indian territory through the Simna area.

They had been in hiding since their arrest in Bangladesh approximately five years ago. Acting on recent intelligence, the Tripura Police initiated the operation that led to their arrest.

Providing details, an official stated, “The duo was arrested in Bangladesh around 5 years back. Since then, they have been in hiding. Recently, we received a tip-off. The arrested Sachin’s house is in the Sidhai area, while Omthai resides in Champahower of the Khowai district. They were arrested from the Simna area around 7:30 pm this evening.”

This successful operation adds to Tripura Police’s recent track record, as they have now arrested or facilitated the surrender of over 24 leaders and cadres associated with NLFT (BM) in the last year and a half. Officials attribute this success to anti-insurgency operations driven by intelligence and effective inter-agency coordination.

“Our anti-insurgency operations based on intelligence and inter-agency coordination have been more successful than earlier years and have made a serious dent in the insurgent group. Our efforts to finish off these groups continue,” affirmed police officials, underscoring their commitment to maintaining robust security measures against insurgent activities in the region.
