New Delhi, Dec 13: Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, experienced a shocking security breach on Wednesday afternoon when two men jumped into the House chamber, causing chaos and panic among Members of Parliament (MPs). The incident, which occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack, raised concerns about the safety and security of the parliamentary complex.

According to initial reports, the two men, who were carrying gas canisters, made a sudden appearance in the Lok Sabha. As chaos ensued, one MP described the unexpected entry of the individuals, noting that they seemed to come out of nowhere, and yellow smoke filled the air.

The MPs detailed the sequence of events that unfolded during the security breach:

  1. BJP MP Khargen Murmu Speaking: The chaos erupted while BJP MP Khargen Murmu was addressing the Lok Sabha. One individual jumped from the visitors’ gallery, initially hanging from the barrier before making a full descent into the House.
  2. Second Individual Jumps: Following the first individual, another man from the visitors’ gallery also jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber.
  3. Jumping Across Benches: The two intruders began jumping from bench to bench inside the Lok Sabha, causing panic among the MPs.
  4. Overpowering the Intruders: Some MPs managed to overpower the intruders, attempting to bring the situation under control.
  5. Gas Emanation: Amid the chaos, the individuals pulled out something from their shoes, leading to the release of a colorful gas. This further escalated the situation, with MPs experiencing eye irritation and other difficulties.
  6. Detention by Security: Parliament security swiftly intervened and detained the two individuals. They were subsequently taken to the nearby Parliament Street police station for questioning.

It was revealed that the individuals had entered the Lok Sabha using visitors’ passes that were signed off by some MP’s office. This raised concerns about the security protocol and will be subject to investigation.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury highlighted that one of the intruders sprayed “some kind of gas,” causing eye irritation among MPs. Trinamool Congress leader Kakoli Dastidar also mentioned that the intruders were shouting slogans while spraying the gas.

Congress MP Karti Chidambaram emphasized the severity of the breach, especially given the date’s historical significance—the day when Parliament was attacked in 2001. He described the individuals, approximately 20 years old, jumping into the House with canisters emitting yellow smoke, suggesting the potential toxicity of the substance.

The incident prompted the adjournment of Lok Sabha proceedings, and MPs were evacuated from the chamber, raising questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the parliamentary complex. The breach serves as a stark reminder of the need for stringent security protocols to safeguard the sanctity of India’s democratic institutions.
