Kolkata, Jan 12: A significant development unfolded on Friday as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) initiated searches at various locations in West Bengal in connection with an ongoing municipal jobs scam case.
The focus of the searches included two premises linked to Bengal Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose, along with one premise each associated with Trinamool MLA Tapas Roy and a former vice-chairman of the municipality.
The enforcement action commenced at approximately 6:40 am, marking a notable step in the investigation into the alleged irregularities in municipal job recruitments.
The case, which came to light in April 2023, prompted the Calcutta High Court to direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the recruitment-related anomalies within municipalities.
Both the ED and the CBI are actively examining the irregularities surrounding the recruitment processes conducted by civic bodies in West Bengal. The involvement of high-profile figures, including a minister and a Trinamool MLA, adds a layer of significance to the unfolding events.
It is essential to note that in August 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by the West Bengal government challenging the CBI’s involvement in the case. This legal development underscored the court’s determination to allow a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities.

This recent round of ED searches echoes the investigative efforts previously undertaken on October 5, during which multiple locations, including the residence of Food and Supplies Minister Rathin Ghosh, were scrutinized in connection with the same recruitment case.
The sustained focus on such high-profile individuals and the persistence of investigative agencies signal a commitment to unravelling the complexities of the municipal jobs scam.
As the searches unfold, the outcome of the ED’s efforts may shed light on the extent of alleged irregularities, providing a clearer picture of the case’s implications on the political landscape of West Bengal.
The municipal jobs scam continues to be a matter of public concern and judicial scrutiny, with investigative agencies playing a crucial role in unveiling the truth behind the recruitment process discrepancies.
