Guwahati, Feb 18: The Assam-based All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) is facing a crucial decision ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections: whether to support the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) or the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL).

In a press conference held at the ABSU central office in Kokrajhar town, ABSU President Dipen Boro outlined the organization’s stance, emphasizing the importance of candidates with a strong nationalist ethos and a firm commitment to the complete implementation of the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR) peace accord.

The decision-making process within ABSU has been influenced by discussions held at the central session of the organization in Golaghat, where approximately 3000 members convened.

Boro underscored the pressing issues facing the Bodo community, particularly the unresolved aspects of the Bodo peace accord.

Key concerns include boundary disputes, the amendment of the 6th schedule, the transition from Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) to BTR, as well as issues about the Karbi Anglong ST Hills and the status of Bodo Kachari Councils.

According to Boro, effective political representation is essential for addressing these challenges. He emphasized the need for an MP from the Bodo community who can advocate for their interests and ensure the proper implementation of the peace accord.

ABSU is closely scrutinizing the dedication of political parties and candidates to the Bodo peace accord, seeking assurances of their unwavering commitment.

Currently, ABSU is engaged in a deliberative process, consulting with intellectuals, senior members, and Bodo voters across various constituencies.

The organization is gathering feedback and assessing the positions of different political parties to determine the most viable course of action for the upcoming elections.
