VPP Meghalaya

Shillong, Aug 18: The recent allocation of the ground floor of Meghalaya House in Kolkata to Rocky Dhar, the brother of cabinet minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, has raised concerns and allegations of nepotism by the Voice of the People Party (VPP). The VPP has questioned the decision made by the General Administration Department (GAD) and expressed its dismay over what it sees as favoritism in the allocation process.

In a statement released by Ricky AJ Syngkon, the General Secretary of the VPP, the party expressed its shock and disappointment at the decision made by the GAD to allocate the ground floor of the Commercial Complex in Meghalaya House, located at Russell Street in Kolkata, to M/S Rocky Dhar for business purposes. The statement emphasizes that this decision raises serious questions about transparency and fairness in the allocation of government resources.

According to reports, after three unsuccessful attempts, the government finally awarded the tender to M/S Rocky Dhar. The VPP calls for a clear explanation from the government regarding any changes in terms and conditions that may have occurred to favor this particular individual or business entity.

The ground floor of Meghalaya House is currently occupied by three government departments and corporations, including the Tourist Information Centre under the Directorate of Tourism, the Directorate of Horticulture, and the Meghalaya Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd – Government State Emporium. These units and outlets were established to promote the products and services of various government departments on commercial terms.

The allocation of the ground floor to an individual businessman raises questions about the government’s priorities and its commitment to serving the interests of the people who voted for them. The VPP’s statement highlights the apparent discrepancy between the government’s duty to serve the public and its decision to promote the interests of a single individual. This has led to concerns that the current administration is prioritizing personal interests over the collective welfare of the citizens it is meant to represent.

The allegations of nepotism, in this case, shed light on the larger issue of transparency, accountability, and fair governance. It calls into question the ethical standards that public officials should uphold when making decisions about resource allocation. The VPP’s statement underscores the importance of government actions being guided by principles of fairness, equity, and the greater public good.

The incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities and obligations that come with holding public office. Public officials are entrusted with the duty to make decisions that benefit the entire community and are expected to maintain the highest levels of integrity and ethics. Any perception of favoritism or nepotism can erode public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to prioritize the well-being of its citizens.

As allegations of nepotism continue to be a concern in various sectors, it is crucial for governments to uphold transparent processes and demonstrate their commitment to serving the people. Instances like the allocation of the ground floor of Meghalaya House underscore the need for vigilance in ensuring that decisions made by public officials are just, fair, and free from personal biases. Only by doing so can governments maintain the trust and respect of the citizens they serve.
