Kabul, Nov 24: The Afghan embassy in New Delhi has officially declared its permanent closure, attributing the decision to persistent challenges from the Indian government. The embassy ceased operations on September 30, and the latest announcement solidifies the closure effective November 23, 2023.

The decision was made with the hope that the Indian government’s stance would change favorably to allow the mission to operate normally.

The embassy emphasized that the move should not be misconstrued as an internal conflict involving diplomats who allegedly switched allegiance to the Taliban. Instead, it clarified that the decision stems from broader changes in policy and interests. The statement conveyed gratitude to the Afghan citizens in India for their understanding and support during the mission’s tenure.

Despite facing limitations in resources and power, the embassy asserted that it had worked tirelessly for the betterment of Afghan citizens in India amid the absence of a legitimate government in Kabul.

Over the past two years and three months, the Afghan community in India has witnessed a significant decline, with a notable decrease in Afghan refugees, students, and traders. The embassy noted that the number has nearly halved since August 2021, with very limited new visas issued during this period.

The Afghan embassy asserted that it operated with transparency, accountability, and a commitment to fair treatment. It lamented efforts to tarnish its image and hinder diplomatic efforts, especially in justifying the presence and work of Taliban-appointed and affiliated diplomats.

The statement highlighted the embassy’s efforts in securing humanitarian aid, facilitating online education scholarships, promoting ease in trade, and advocating for the formation of an inclusive government.

As of now, there are no diplomats from the Afghan Republic in India. The embassy informed that those who served have safely reached third countries, and the only individuals present in India are diplomats affiliated with the Taliban participating in regular online meetings.

The responsibility of diplomats appointed by the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has officially come to an end, leaving the fate of the mission in the hands of the Indian government.

The embassy acknowledged historic events and current circumstances in arriving at this conclusion and expressed gratitude to the people of India for their support over the past 22 years. It reiterated a commitment to serving the people of Afghanistan and exploring avenues to support the nation in challenging times. The closure of the Afghan Republic mission marks the conclusion of the Afghan Republic in India.
