AFSPA DGP

Guwahati, Oct 01: Director General of Police (DGP) for Assam, GP Singh, declared on October 1 that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA) will now be applicable in only four districts of the state. This announcement was made during a special function commemorating Assam Police Day held at the 4th APBN Kahilipara in Guwahati.

Effective immediately, AFSPA will continue to be enforced in the districts of Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, and Charaideo. However, it has been completely lifted from all other districts in the state.

The presence of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Director Tapan Kumar Deka as a special guest at the ceremony added significance to the occasion. Deka lauded the efforts of Assam Police in their relentless pursuit of peace and harmony within the state.

Praising Assam Police for their dedication, Tapan Kumar Deka acknowledged the transformation the state has undergone, with many militant groups choosing to surrender their arms and integrate into mainstream society.

Additionally, he commended the state police for their effective crackdown on illegal drug trafficking and illicit liquor smuggling, which has contributed to Assam’s progress. Deka advocated for nationwide recognition and the acknowledgement of the courage and valor displayed by Assam Police.

Furthermore, IB Director Tapan Kumar Deka expressed his hope that Assam Police would receive the recognition it deserves, similar to other state police departments. He emphasized that Assam Police have played a commendable role in restoring peace within the state, combating rebel groups, and addressing insurgency in the region.
