Guwahati, Feb 13: Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora has officially declared ‘Citrus Limon’ as the state fruit of Assam, putting an end to speculation surrounding this aspect of Assamese identity.

The announcement, made in the state’s legislative assembly, solidifies the importance of ‘Citrus Limon’ (Kaji Nemu) in Assam’s agricultural heritage.

The decision to designate ‘Citrus Limon’ as the state fruit has garnered both curiosity and approval. While the concept of a state fruit might have been unfamiliar to some, Minister Bora’s announcement establishes it as a significant aspect of Assam’s agricultural landscape.

He emphasized the medicinal properties and agricultural prominence of the citrus Limon’ during the announcement.

With approximately 15.90 hectares of land dedicated to ‘Citrus Limon’ cultivation in Assam, the fruit plays a vital role in the state’s agricultural sector.

Moreover, it was revealed that a considerable quantity of ‘Citrus Limon’ produced in Assam, totalling 70,000, is exported abroad.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to share the news, stating, “Our Government has decided to declare Kaji Nemu (Citrus Limon) as the State Fruit of Assam. With its unique aroma and antioxidant properties, Assam lemon has enriched our local cuisines.”

The designation of ‘Citrus Limon’ as the state fruit not only enhances Assam’s agricultural identity but also positions it prominently on the global fruit map, fostering self-dependency and production.
