Guwahati, Jan 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that the state government will grant permission for the Congress party to conduct its Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra if the party formally seeks approval.

However, as of now, there is no indication that the Congress has submitted a request for permission to organize the Yatra in Assam.

Scheduled to commence in Imphal, Manipur, on January 14, the Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders, is anticipated to reach Assam on January 18, covering 17 districts until January 25.

Addressing a press conference, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that the chief secretary has not received any information regarding the Congress’s request for permission.

He criticized the Congress for creating unnecessary speculation and emphasized that the Assam government lacks details about the Yatra’s route and schedule.

Despite this, Sarma assured that the state government would grant permission once a formal request is made, asserting that welcoming tourists, regardless of their political affiliations, is a common practice.

Responding to Congress’s claim that permission was denied for utilizing educational institutions in Gogamukh (Dhemaji district) and Jorhat, Sarma clarified that schools and colleges cannot be used during academic sessions.

However, he added that permission could be granted on Sundays. Sarma also specified that the Yatra must stick to national highways and avoid entering Guwahati city limits to prevent traffic disruptions. He suggested that if the Yatra traverses the city, it should conclude before 8 am to minimize traffic impact.

Addressing concerns about Congress leaders staying in fields due to permission issues, Sarma offered assistance, stating that he would direct district commissioners to prepare suitable spaces for them.

This accommodating stance aimed to facilitate the smooth execution of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.

The Yatra, organized by Congress to advocate for economic, social, and political justice, is scheduled to kick off on January 14 in Imphal and conclude in Mumbai on March 20.

The unfolding dynamics between the Assam government and Congress over permissions for the Yatra highlight the intersection of political events and administrative considerations.
